Guccio Gucci, the founder of the House, was born on March 26, 1881, in Florence. He relocated to London as a young man, and in 1897 he started a job as a porter at The Savoy Hotel. He dreamed that one day, luggage would bear his name after returning to Florence in 1902, inspired by the jet set he saw there. In 1921, he built the first Gucci boutique on Via della Vigna Nuova.

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the House’s history has left an enduring impact on fashion and society, reflecting and characterising the decades that gave rise to it.
